Payments in a foreign currency

Send the money in the currency the person receives. Fixing the rate before you send means the bank overseas cannot surprise you with a conversion charge.

  • The rate is fixed before you send
  • Arrives sooner in an account overseas
  • Fewer conversion charges along the way

What we need for a payment abroad

1

Their name & address

The person's full legal name and home address, exactly as their bank has it.

2

IBAN or account number

The International Account Number (IBAN) for accounts in Europe or the UK, or their local account number.

3

SWIFT / BIC code

The 8 or 11-character SWIFT/BIC code that points to the person's branch overseas.

4

Middle bank, if there is one

Routing details for the bank in between, if the country's clearing system asks for them.

Foreign currency questions

What people ask about how long payments take, fixing a rate, and IBAN details.

When you send in the other country's currency, you fix the rate before the money leaves. If you send U.S. Dollars to an account held in another currency, the bank at the far end does the conversion at its own counter rate and may add a charge you were not expecting.
Most arrive at the bank overseas within 1 to 2 business days. It can take a little longer depending on the country, its opening hours, and the time difference.
Checks from abroad are collected through our international partner banks. We put the money into your account once the bank that issued the check has settled it.
